Bonus: Unsplash

iStock’s parent company, Getty Images, also owns Unsplash, a platform offering free images. Unsplash images have a custom license with certain restrictions, offering a safe option for cost-free visuals. Though not as premium as iStock’s paid library, Unsplash is a solid alternative for those with limited budgets.

Understanding Usage Rights

Both free trial and weekly free images come with a royalty-free license, which supports wide commercial use. These licenses provide security for various projects. However, free platforms like Unsplash often lack thorough rights vetting, which can pose copyright risks. Learn all about the agency's licensing options here.

  1. Amos, I want to buy a few photos on Istock to use on my new website. I am a real property consultant and the photos are of mountains, fields…etc. Would I be able to use the photos in this capacity. It seems like I should.
    Thanks,
    Matt.

    • Hi Matthew, thanks for your question. Sure I don’t see an issue why not. Nevertheless I recommend to always double check their terms and conditions and license.

      • I am an artist and would like to use photos as references.
do I need to get permission to sell a painting?
I always give credit to photographer listed.

        • Hi Lynne, honestly I don’t recommend to use stock photos to use them as reference photos. Just go and find photographers on any of the platforms in the internet and ask them directly if you can paint their nice photos. Most of them will be thrilled and happy to let you do it. Stock photos are not really made for that, neither are any of the stock image licenses. I hope that helps.
