What is Canva – A Brief Overview

Canva is a web-based design platform specifically thought for non-designers. It combines the power of professional editing software with a user-friendly concept that requires no previous knowledge, enabling people with no design skills to produce professional-quality visuals.
It offers a convenient free forever membership with great functions and free assets, and an array of premium content and features for paid subscribers. Canva is a popular choice among users, with over 130 million active members in 2024.
Over the past decade, the service has evolved significantly, adding a range of comprehensive features and expanding its usability. Today, it offers a wealth of branding and marketing resources, as well as generative AI features, making it a compelling choice for professionals, large companies, and beginners alike.
While ease of use remains at the core of the platform's offer and the editor's learning curve is smooth, it includes a large depository of tutorials and guides to help users enhance their design skills and obtain better results using its features. More info can be found here in our Canva review.
Canva Price Comparison: Free, Pro, and Teams
All Canva plans are available monthly or yearly. The yearly prices are lower but require an upfront payment.
| Plan | Monthly Price | Annual Price |
|---|---|---|
| Free | – | – |
| Pro | $15/mo | $120/yr ($10/mo) |
| Teams | $10/mo per person – min 3 people ($30/mo) | $100/yr per person – min 3 people ($300/yr) – ($8.33/mo per person) |
If you can afford it, a yearly membership is the most cost-effective investment, saving you $60 or more annually.
Still, all prices are fairly reasonable, especially when you know what's included in your subscription, which we'll explore next.

Free Trial with One Month of Full Premium Access
At the time of publishing this article, the website has a free trial offer available for both the Pro and Teams plans. The offer gives users the first month for free from an annual Pro or Teams subscription. During the initial 30 days, subscribers enjoy all the benefits of the premium service at no cost.
If they remain subscribed, they’ll be charged for the rest of the year at the start of the second month. If canceled before the first month is up, no charges will apply. It’s the perfect opportunity to test how the platform works and if it suits your needs before committing to a paid membership.
Canva for Free – The Starter Plan
![Canva Pricing Guide [wpsm_custom_meta type=date field=year]: Free, Pro, Teams & More canva pro pricing, canva free home page](png/canva-free-home-2024.png)
The no-cost version of Canva is free without time limitations and has a lot to offer:
- Access to the image and video editors
- All essential functions + some advanced features
- 250,000 free templates for over 100 formats (flyers, social media, etc.)
- 1M+ free photos, graphics, and videos with Canva's free-use license.
- Limited AI features: Image generator, Magic Design, Magic Write
- One brand kit –to upload your brand image elements and automatically apply them to all your visuals.
- Limited collaboration for team members.
- 5GB storage.
The license included with free assets has some restrictions, yet it enables commercial use. Plus, you can purchase premium assets on demand for $1 each at your discretion. While the functionality you get access to is limited, it still lets you create appealing visuals in minutes.
This option has limitations, but it helps test the waters with the service and is a very good solution for those who need a design tool but cannot currently invest in a paid subscription.
Canva Pro – Premium Features and Assets
![Canva Pricing Guide [wpsm_custom_meta type=date field=year]: Free, Pro, Teams & More canva pro pricing, canva pro home page](png/canva-pro-home-2024.png)
If you have a business or project needing higher-quality content or want to expand and improve your creative workflow, upgrading to a premium subscription makes much more sense. Canva Pro, the paid option for individuals, goes for between $10 and $15 monthly and is packed with value. Here is what you get with your membership:
- Full access to image and video editors
- Unlimited downloads of all content
- Over 610,000 design templates
- 100 Million+ premium assets, including photos, graphics, stickers, GIFs, video clips, and audio tracks
- Pro royalty-free license for cleared for commercial use (one license per design – learn more about the Canva Pro license here!)
- Magic Studio: Multiple advanced generative AI features, including Magic Media (text to image, video, or graphic), Magic Write for text generation, Magic Switch for instant reformatting, and Magic Resize to automatically resize your visual without altering the design, among others
- Content Publisher that lets you schedule and post your designs to your chosen social media channels directly from Canva
- One-click background remover
- Multiple Brand Kits – Upload and use up to 100 brand identity folders.
- 1TB storage plus unlimited folders
- Preferential customer support via email (response within 24 hours instead of the seven days it can take for free users)
This is just a quick overview of Pro's essential features. The membership is full of valuable additions that far exceed its price and solve most, if not all, small businesses and freelancers' content creation and management needs.
Canva for Teams (Formerly Canva Enterprise) – Collaborative Tools and Advanced Controls
![Canva Pricing Guide [wpsm_custom_meta type=date field=year]: Free, Pro, Teams & More canva pro pricing, canva teams home page](png/canva-teams-home-2024.png)
The Teams plan is essentially the same as Pro but with additional seats and bonus functions explicitly designed for team workflows. Besides all the premium content and features of a Pro plan, with Teams, you get:
- Real-time collaboration with comments, notes, and more interactive features
- Admin controls for team supervisors, including task assigning, approval requests, template locking (to avoid others editing), and denying access to downloads of specific assets.
- Expanded brand kits (300 instead of 100) and special brand controls to prevent members from using certain elements in branded content
- Custom, editable templates you can create and store for others to reuse
- Singe-sign-on (SSO), where users get a single set of login credentials across various applications
- Expanded storage with 1TB per team member
- ISO 27001 certification and SOC 2 Type II compliance
While this type of multiseat account normally comes at a steep cost elsewhere, it’s reasonably convenient at Canva (even with the latest price update for Teams from September 2024). Here, each team member costs $10 per month or $100 per year. The minimum is three users.
It’s ideal for small businesses, as a three-member plan would cost $300 a year, considerably lower than many other alternatives.
If you run a large company, they have tailored Enterprise plans, available upon direct contact with a sales representative.
Canva for Nonprofits – Free Premium Access
![Canva Pricing Guide [wpsm_custom_meta type=date field=year]: Free, Pro, Teams & More canva pro pricing, nonprofits home page](png/canva-for-nonprofits-2024.png)
This company engages in actions for solidarity and contribution to society. They have a program that allows not-for-profit entities to submit an online application to get full, free premium access to the platform. The eligibility of applicants is at Canva’s discretion.
Canva for Education – Team Plans with Added Features
![Canva Pricing Guide [wpsm_custom_meta type=date field=year]: Free, Pro, Teams & More canva pro pricing, education home page](png/canva-for-education-2024.png)
Similarly, primary and secondary teachers and K-12 (primary and secondary) schools can sign up for a special, free premium plan at Canva for educational purposes and give their students access to the service under admin controls. If your school has a Canva membership, all you need to do is sign up with a student-certified email and be approved for access. See what projects for kids you can do with Canva!
Universities and other higher education institutions may also acquire a Canva for Campus plan, essentially a Teams account with special features for students and professors. The cost of these plans is tailored to each institution.

Your article lists
Month-to-Month Membership Annual Membership
$6.49 per month $4.58 per month (billed annually at $54.99)
When I look the cost is $12.99 per month or $119.99 per year.
Is your article very old or do you just have incorrect information?
Hi, Ron. Thank you for your comment. You are very right, Canva Pro’s current pricing is $12.99/month or $119.99/year. Our article is not old, it was actually updated at the end of August 2021 to reflect a temporary price-cut in Canva memberships. As you sharply pointed out, the plans are now back to regular pricing. We have updated our article to reflect this, and we thank you for pointing it out to us.
Where can I find stock photos of people to use on Zazzle POD for wedding invites with unlimited license and at low cost? THANK YOU
Hi Peter, thank you for your question. Unlimited licenses you might never get from any stock agency since they always need to limit their usage. Nevertheless you must know that licensing into Zazzle Pro is not easy. Because you usually need to give Zazzle (or the printing company or fulfilling company) sub-license or even distribution rights. These rights are hard to get and most stock agency do not offer that type of license (not even in their expensive extended license version). As far as I understand, the Canva license do not include a way to use the design in POD (print-on-demand). We will write soon about a new stock agency which will have a special POD-License to be used. So stay tuned here and sorry that I can not give you a very fast and easy answer on this. Also please always check with a lawyer, this is not a legal advice.
Did the prices increase for pro again to 14.99 instead of 12.99 a month?
Hi Daniel, Canva modifies its pricing according to region, and sometimes they make changes to their monthly and annual price points. In some regions, the current price for Canva Pro month-to-month membership is $14.99 per month, yes. Hope this helps!
